Rum Reviews & Ramblings: Welcome

DESCRIBING RUMS IN A WAY THAT PAINTS A PICTURE AS WELL AS GIVES THE EVERYDAY READER REFERENCES THAT ARE BOTH FAMILIAR AND RELATABLE

I started in the world of wine tasting around 2006. These tastings were always blinded, so you had to work on finding and building a repertoire of a broad range of descriptors in order to piece together what you had in your glass...So when it comes to smell and flavour description, I’ve been doing it for quite a few years. In 2015, my interest in rum was sparked and since then I have thrown myself deep in to the world of this amazing spirit and wonderful people.

Neisson Agricole Blanc Rhum - 50% abv.

Neisson Agricole Blanc Rhum - 50% abv.

There’s no question that this is an agricole when you get it close to your nose. Its green!…and slightly grassy…but more green. Almost like green bell peppers. There is also something a little sour smelling and meaty at the same time. I don’t know how this is the case, but the first thing that comes to mind when I smell this rhum is green pepper, pepperoni and bacon pizza. Even the sourdough pizza crust is coming through. This is strange and weird and uncomfortably awesome! Topped with cracked black pepper and fennel seeds. Over-ripe, almost rotten lemon together with mango peel cover the nose’s slightly fruity notes. This nose is funky and not at all the typical grass-bomb you would expect.

On the palate this liquid is spicy! Green and black peppercorns up front. The fennel seeds that I felt hints of on the nose erupt into full-on anise and liquorice root. Familiar agricole flavours of fresh green sugar cane, dried grass and dusty cardboard follow. Rubber and plastic notes are also there along with mild green olives and salty brine. Some creamy and somewhat sweet notes come through that help break through the sharp acetone and alcohol. The long finish, once the liquorice has finally faded, leaves you with a refreshing citrus taste that leaves me somewhat thirsty…

Nice rhum. I like this. Especially for the price.

If you like white agricole, this is definitely one to try. Different yet still true to its name.
