The Funk Jamaican Pot Still - 50% abv.
Updated: Dec 26, 2018
The Funk Jamaican Pot Still - 50% abv. - I have no problem declaring my love for heavy-funky-white-unaged-Pot-still-Jamaican-rums (I believe that should be one word). I have always praised Hampden’s Rum Fire and Worthy Park’s Rum Bar overproof. So, when I heard that another high-proof white beauty was coming out of Worthy Park, my hopes were high! I will do my best to not compare to other rums that I know and love and just describe what I find in my glass: The Funk? Yes indeed! Funky from the get go! Both fruity and green/vegetal. Not green in the grassy agricole-way, but almost more like freshly cut cucumber. Pineapple and honeydew melon. Coconut. Some baking spices as well. Cardamom. And sitting with it for a while and and not being able to put my finger on it...Marzipan! Crazy amounts of Marzipan! Citrus fruits are not so strong, but perhaps hints of tangerine. Under all of this (or perhaps over) is a hint of acetone that I can’t seem to slip...but not enough to prevent me from wanting to down this like a glass of cold juice on a hot sunny day. On the palate, the first taste that jumps out at me is ripe Anjou pear. And lots of it! Fresh pressed pineapple juice. Pink peppercorns. Granny-smith apples. Slight nuttiness. Almonds...perhaps reflecting the Marzipan notes on the nose. The finish is medium-long ending with a mix of pear and licorice root and cucumber. Kind of interesting. The mouthfeel is quite thin. Could have been more oily in my opinion. The heat is high for 50%, but this will work well in cocktails...and to confess, I already know it makes a killer daiquiri. All in all, a decent rum. ...perhaps not the best I’ve had, but a decent competitor in its style for sure.
